Recognizing the need to communicate scientific issues to the general public, the Symposium committee of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) 7th International PhD Students Symposium "Biology at Work - A Journey Through Applied Life Sciences", in association with the European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences, and the Science & Society programme of the EMBL, presents the 2nd EMBL PhD student science writing competition.
The PhD Student writing prize is awarded for an outstanding piece of science writing designed to communicate a scientific issue to a non-scientific audience. The essay should cover a topic from the 7th International EMBL PhD Students Symposium "Biology at Work - A Journey Through Applied Life Sciences ", or the PhD student's field of study, related to the topics of the symposium.
Essays will be evaluated for both content and style, by a panel of judges comprised of the following people:
There will be one winner and the prize will be awarded at the 7th International EMBL PhD Students Symposium "Biology at Work - A Journey Through Applied Life Sciences ", from 1st - 3rd December in Heidelberg. The wining essay will be published in the Symposium abstract booklet.
Any PhD student who is working on his / her thesis at the time of the Symposium is eligible. The student must have registered to attend the symposium. The essay piece must not have been published previously in any medium, or be intended for publication in any medium, and should preferably have been written specifically for the competition. The language of the competition is English. The article should be about 1000 words (1-2 A4 pages).
Contributions can be submitted in any commonly readable electronic format (such as .txt, .rtf or .pdf) as an email attachment until November 1st, 2005. Only one article per candidate will be considered. Special attention will be given to innovative style of writing and novel ways of communicating science to a non-scientific audience.
